Frequently Asked Questions About Lighting

When it comes to camp lighting, there are several options:

Camping lanterns - Handy and portable camping lanterns are a staple of campsites. Usually rechargeable or powered by batteries, these camping lights provide reliable illumination and can be easily moved around to give light where you need it.

12v Lights - As the name suggests, 12v lights require a 12 volt DC power source, typically a battery system either in a vehicle or camper or a stand-alone battery box. Many 12v light options are panel mounted which are ideal for providing fixed light sources around caravans, camp trailers or vehicles, but others are portable, so long as they can be plugged into a battery.

Torches - Handheld torches are ideal for moving around campsites in the dark - nobody wants to walk into an obstacle or tread on a creepy crawly on the way to the ablutions. Torches are also an essential piece of kit for illuminating detailed tasks, finding lost items and lighting repair tasks at home or away.

Headlamps - If you want to see where you're going and keep your hands free, a headlamp is an ideal solution. These highly compact yet powerful lights have a head band that allows you to comfortably place the light on your forehead, so you can illuminate whichever direction you're looking at. Extremely popular with hikers and climbers who need to keep their hands free, head torches are also excellent for walking around campsites at night, sports such as running and even repair jobs around the home or vehicle.

Spotlights - Handheld spotlights provide bright illumination over distance. Spotlights are good for applications where you need to check your surroundings a long way off such as following tracks and paths, game spotting and emergency situations.

Rechargeable lights are a great idea. With internal batteries you're not bound to a power source by a cable, and you don't need to pack lots of disposable batteries saving waste, money and packing space. Modern rechargeable lights are usually powered by lithium-ion batteries which are much more efficient and have a longer lifespan than older lead-acid battery models. If you are going off the grid, though, you will need to consider whether you can charge the lights between uses.

White light is the most effective light to use to perform tasks at night, so why do some camp lights and headlamps give red lighting or amber lighting options?

Amber lighting is used mainly to minimize the number of bugs swarming around your light. The warmer colour tone is thought to be less attractive to insects than harsher white or blue toned lights. The warmer colour is also less harsh on your eyes and helps to reduce glare and maintain some night vision better.

Red lighting is a popular feature in headlamps as the longer wavelength of light compared to white light maintains your night vision better.
